If you’re looking for a quick escape from Dallas with fresh air, lake views, and room to roam, I’d point you straight to Cedar Hill, Texas. Just a short drive from the city, I’ve found it’s the kind of place where you can slow down without going far. I’ve spent weekends hiking, browsing shops, and unwinding in the parks, and I think you’ll love how it blends nature and convenience so effortlessly.

Best Time to Visit

I’ve visited Cedar Hill in every season, and trust me—spring and fall are the sweet spots. Between March and May or September and November, the weather’s just right for hiking, biking, or a stroll through Cedar Hill State Park. If you like sunny days by the lake, summer’s a great time too. I’ve gone paddleboarding on Joe Pool Lake in July, and as long as you’ve got sunscreen, you’re set for a fun afternoon.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually hop on US-67—Cedar Hill is just 20 miles southwest of downtown Dallas. It’s an easy drive, and I always enjoy how quickly the city gives way to hills and trees.
  • By Air: When I’ve flown in, I’ve used either Dallas Love Field (DAL) or DFW. Both are about 30 to 40 minutes away, and I’ve never had trouble getting there with a rental or rideshare.
  • By Public Transit: DART buses run nearby, but if you ask me, having a car makes everything simpler. I like being able to get to trailheads or grab a bite in town without waiting around.

Where to Stay

  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites Cedar Hill – I’ve stayed here for a quick trip, and it checks all the boxes—clean rooms, free breakfast, and super close to the highway if you’re heading into Dallas or the lake.
  • La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham – This one's a solid choice if you want to be near the shops and restaurants. I found it quiet and comfortable after a full day outside.
  • Local Airbnbs – I’ve rented a few great places near Joe Pool Lake and even right in the heart of town. If you like a bit more space or a homey vibe, you’ll find some gems here.
