Need a historic getaway packed with natural beauty and American heritage? I’d say head to Valley Forge! I’ve walked its trails and stood in the same fields where the Continental Army camped—and every time, I’m reminded of just how much history happened here. Whether you're in the mood for a quiet nature escape or want to dive deep into Revolutionary War stories, I think you'll find Valley Forge both inspiring and peaceful. And the best part? It’s just outside Philly.

Valley Forge, PA Highlights:

  • Valley Forge National Historical Park: This is where I always start. You can explore cabins, monuments, and wide-open fields that tell a powerful story. I’ve hiked here in every season—it never gets old.
  • Washington’s Headquarters: Stepping into this stone house gave me chills. You’re standing where Washington lived during that brutal winter of 1777–78, and it really brings the history to life.
  • National Memorial Arch: I love stopping here for a moment of reflection. It’s grand and peaceful, with views that stretch across the park. Bring your camera—it’s a favorite photo spot.
  • Joseph Plumb Martin Trail: I’ve biked the full 8.7-mile loop, and it’s such a great way to see all the key sites in the park. Even just walking a section gives you a feel for the landscape and its stories.
  • King of Prussia Town Center: After a day outdoors, I like heading here for dinner or a little shopping. It’s modern, stylish, and super close to the park—definitely worth a stop.

Best Time to Visit

My favorite times to visit are spring and fall (April–June and September–November). The weather is just right for walking or biking, and in the fall, the foliage adds this incredible glow to the entire park. If you’re into photography or just love scenic views, you’ll want to time your trip for peak color season.

How to Get There

  • Driving? I usually take U.S. Route 422—it’s an easy 30-minute ride from Philadelphia, depending on traffic. The signage is clear, and parking at the park is free.
  • Taking the train? You can hop on SEPTA’s Paoli/Thorndale Line and get off at Paoli or Wayne. I’ve done this before—it’s smooth, and from there it’s a short bus ride or quick drive to the park.
  • Flying in? Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is about 40 minutes away. I’ve picked up rental cars there, and it’s a straight shot to Valley Forge.

Where to Stay

  • Valley Forge Casino Resort – I stayed here once for a mix of history and fun. You’ve got dining, a pool, and the casino all minutes from the park. It’s perfect if you want entertainment built into your stay.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Philadelphia Valley Forge/King of Prussia – This is a great base. I like how close it is to both the park and King of Prussia Mall. The rooms are modern and comfortable, with everything you need.
  • The Alloy King of Prussia – a DoubleTree by Hilton – If you’re after a little more style, I’d recommend this one. I’ve had friends stay here and rave about the service, the on-site restaurant, and how close it is to everything.
