Looking for a historic small town with scenic charm, local eats, and access to the outdoors? Head to Butler! I visited Butler on a road trip north of Pittsburgh and was immediately struck by its welcoming community and mix of history and nature. Just 35 miles from the city, this town is full of stories—from its industrial roots to its laid-back lifestyle. Whether I’m exploring a local museum, hiking through nearby forests, or popping into a farmers market, Butler always gives me that easygoing Pennsylvania getaway feel.

When I Think You Should Visit

The best time to visit Butler is spring through fall (April to October). I’ve come in summer for the markets and parks, and again in fall when the trees are glowing with color. Spring brings blooming gardens and perfect hiking weather, while autumn is all about cozy events and crisp air. Winter can be quiet, but if you like peaceful snowy streets and holiday lights, it’s a lovely time to slow down and enjoy the season.

How I Got There (and How You Can Too)

  • By Car: I usually drive in—it’s super easy via U.S. Route 422 or PA-68. From Pittsburgh, it’s about 45 minutes, and just under 2 hours from Erie. The countryside views on the way in are a bonus.
  • By Air: The closest major airport is Pittsburgh International (PIT), which is about an hour southwest of Butler. I’ve flown in and rented a car, and the drive is smooth and scenic.
  • By Bus: Regional buses serve the area, and the Butler Transit Authority makes getting around locally a breeze. It’s a nice option if you’re staying in town and want to leave the car behind.

Where I’ve Stayed (or Would Happily Recommend)

  • SpringHill Suites by Marriott Pittsburgh Butler/Centre City – I stayed here once and loved being close to downtown. The modern feel, comfy beds, and free breakfast made it an easy choice.
  • Hampton Inn Butler – If you want a spot near shops and restaurants, this is a solid pick. I appreciated the indoor pool and hot breakfast—it’s great for families or a relaxed weekend.
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Butler – Another reliable option with spacious rooms and great highway access. It’s a good base if you plan to explore both town and countryside.
