The Mary D. Hume is a historic steamboat that was constructed in Gold Beach back in 1881 and saw nearly one hundred years of active service, the longest service time for a commercial vessel along the Pacific coast of the United States. This ship, owned by businessman R.D. Hume, was used originally to haul goods between Oregon and San Francisco before becoming a whaler up in Alaska. The Mary D. Hume sank in the Rogue River in 1985 and was never removed. The steamer is noted on the National Register of Historic Places and has become a tourist attraction.
