Connected to Milwaukee by a remarkable 40-million year-old land bridge formed during ancient volcanic activity, Elk Rock Island can be accessed on foot during low tide. The island is a joy to visit for any nature lover. It covers a little more than 13 acres, which are home to several different habitats including vernal pools, which provide a home for many species of amphibians and other aquatic creatures. The other habitats are equally important, providing ideal conditions for birds to thrive. You can explore the island on foot along various hiking trails to uncover and admire more than 50 species of rare and unique plants.
