Need a fun day trip or weekend escape just outside New York City? I say head to Yonkers! I’ve made the short trip from Manhattan more times than I can count, and every time, I find something new to enjoy. You’ll love the blend of riverside beauty, urban energy, and peaceful parks. Whether you're kayaking on the Hudson, wandering lush gardens, or just grabbing a great meal by the water, Yonkers gives you that small-town ease with big-city excitement—without the long travel time.

Yonkers, NY Highlights:

  • Untermyer Gardens Conservancy: I could spend hours in these gardens—there’s just something magical about the fountains, the Moorish-style architecture, and the river views. You should definitely bring a camera, because it’s stunning in every season.
  • Yonkers Waterfront: I love strolling along the waterfront promenade, especially at sunset. You’ll find great places to eat, pop-up events, and public art—it’s become one of my go-to spots when I need a breath of fresh air.
  • Hudson River Museum: This place is a hidden gem. I’ve wandered through art exhibits, toured the mansion, and even caught a show in the planetarium. You’ll be surprised how much you can do here in just one visit.
  • Cross County Center: When I’m in the mood to shop or grab a bite outdoors, this is where I head. You’ll find all the major brands and a fun, lively vibe—especially during seasonal events and summer pop-ups.
  • Science Barge: I brought friends here last spring, and we were all impressed. It’s a floating urban farm powered by renewable energy, and it’s such a cool stop if you’re into sustainability—or just looking for something totally different.

Best Time to Visit

If you ask me, the best time to explore Yonkers is from April through October. That’s when the gardens bloom, waterfront events pop up, and the weather invites you outside. I’ve also visited in the fall to catch the foliage—it’s beautiful along the river. Winter’s quieter, but I’ve enjoyed cozying up in restaurants and checking out museums when the crowds thin out.

How to Get There

  • If you are traveling by car: I usually drive up the Saw Mill or I-87—it’s a smooth 30–40 minute ride from Midtown, depending on traffic. Parking’s not bad either, which is always a win near the city.
  • By Train: Metro-North makes it super easy. I’ve hopped on at Grand Central and been in Yonkers Station in about 30 minutes. From there, you can walk straight to the waterfront.
  • By Plane: If you’re flying in, you’ve got options. I’ve used LaGuardia and Westchester County Airport—they’re both under an hour’s drive, depending on your timing.

Where to Stay

  • Hyatt Place New York/Yonkers – I’ve stayed here when I wanted to be near Cross County Center. It’s clean, convenient, and comes with free breakfast—which I always appreciate when I’m on the go.
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Yonkers – This one’s a favorite when I’m traveling with family. You’ll like the indoor pool and relaxed vibe—plus, it’s close to everything without feeling too busy.
  • Royal Regency Hotel – I’ve recommended this to friends who prefer something with a boutique feel. The rooms are updated, there’s a restaurant on site, and the location makes it easy to explore all around Westchester.
