If you’re dreaming of a waterfront escape without straying far from the city, I’d point you straight to New Rochelle. Every time I go, I’m surprised by how much it offers—beaches, downtown dining, and that breezy, relaxed vibe right on Long Island Sound. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a coastal retreat, but you’re still just a short hop from Manhattan. Whether you’re after culture, fresh seafood, or just some space to unwind, I know you’ll find it here like I did.
Best Time to Visit
I usually tell people to plan a visit between May and October. You’ll catch the city at its most vibrant—perfect weather for beach days, boat tours, and festivals along the waterfront. I’ve spent afternoons just strolling through the parks or catching outdoor concerts. And if you make it in fall? You’ll love the foliage all across Westchester County—it’s honestly stunning, and I always bring my camera.
How to Get There
- Driving in? I’ve taken both I-95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway—it’s a smooth 30-minute drive from Midtown Manhattan, or about 20 minutes if you’re coming from White Plains. You’ll love how easy it is to zip in and out.
- Taking the train? I’ve ridden Metro-North’s New Haven Line right into New Rochelle Station—it’s fast, clean, and drops you right downtown. I always recommend this if you’re coming from NYC.
- Flying in? I’ve used both Westchester County Airport (HPN) and LaGuardia (LGA). Either way, you’re about 25–30 minutes out, so it’s super convenient for a quick trip.
Where to Stay
- Residence Inn New Rochelle – I stayed here when I needed a bit more space. The kitchenettes are great for longer visits, and you’re right near restaurants and shops—super convenient.
- Hotel NoMa – If you want something stylish with a view, this is it. I loved relaxing by the pool and being able to walk to the train station in minutes.
- Hyatt Place New York/Yonkers – I’ve stayed here too when I needed to be closer to both New Rochelle and the Bronx. Spacious rooms, good amenities, and quick access—can’t go wrong.
