Looking for convenient access to NYC with great eats and suburban charm? I always recommend heading to Hicksville, New York! I’ve spent plenty of time in this centrally located Long Island town, and if you’re like me—someone who loves quick train rides into the city, diverse cuisine, and a relaxed vibe—you’ll find Hicksville surprisingly rewarding. Whether I’m hopping a train to Manhattan, catching a local show, or grabbing amazing Indian food, there’s always something to enjoy.

Best Time to Visit

From my visits, I’ve found that spring and fall (April–June and September–October) are the best times to explore Hicksville. The weather is mild, perfect for strolling parks or grabbing outdoor bites. In summer, I usually plan a beach day nearby—Jones Beach is just a short drive and totally worth it. Winter’s quieter, but I’ve still found plenty of things to do indoors.

How to Get There

  • By Train: I often take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Hicksville Station—it’s a direct ride from Penn Station or Atlantic Terminal in under an hour. Super convenient for day trips.
  • By Car: I’ve driven out via the Long Island Expressway (I-495) or Northern State Parkway—it’s about 40 minutes east of Manhattan. Easy access makes it a great weekend stop.
  • By Air: If you’re flying in, I suggest JFK or LaGuardia. Both airports are 30–45 minutes away depending on traffic, and I’ve done that drive many times without hassle.

Where to Stay

  • Days Inn by Wyndham Hicksville – I’ve stayed here on a quick visit. It’s budget-friendly, includes free breakfast, and is close to main roads—perfect if you’re road-tripping.
  • Extended Stay America – Bethpage – For longer stays, I like having the kitchenette. It’s convenient if you want a little home-away-from-home vibe with business amenities.
  • Hotels in Garden City or Melville – When I’m looking for something more upscale, I stay in one of these nearby areas. Great restaurants and upgraded amenities make it worth the short drive.

Top Attractions

  • Broadway Commons – I’ve spent rainy afternoons here. You’ll find shops, a movie theater, restaurants, and even bowling and arcade fun at Round 1. It’s a great stop for families or friend groups.
  • Long Island Puppet Theater – If you’re traveling with kids or just enjoy quirky local charm, this spot is unique. I caught a show here once and loved the interactive vibe.
  • Cantiague Park – I’ve golfed and gone ice skating here—it’s a huge county park with tons to do year-round. In summer, the pool’s a great place to cool off.
  • Hicksville Gregory Museum – I checked this out on a quieter day. It’s housed in an old courthouse with fossils and local geology exhibits—perfect if you’re into natural history like I am.
  • Nearby Jones Beach – When the sun’s out, I always recommend the 30-minute drive south to Jones Beach. Sand, surf, boardwalk food, and even concerts—it’s a classic Long Island summer outing.
