Looking for a peaceful escape in New York’s Finger Lakes? I say, make your way to Dundee! The first time I visited, I couldn’t get over how relaxed and welcoming everything felt. You’re tucked right between Keuka and Seneca Lakes, surrounded by vineyards, gentle hills, and some of the friendliest locals I’ve met. Whether you’re sipping wine with a view, cruising along country roads, or simply soaking up the lake breeze, Dundee gives you that perfect slow-down-you-need-it kind of getaway. You’ll leave feeling lighter—I know I always do.
Best Time to Visit
From my experience, May through October is ideal. I’ve spent warm summer days hopping between wineries, relaxing by the lake, and picking up fresh produce at farmers markets. And if you’re a fall person like me, you’ll love watching the hills turn gold and red while vineyards buzz with harvest energy. There’s something magical about a crisp autumn afternoon with a glass of local Riesling in hand—you really can’t go wrong.
How to Get There
- Driving in? I usually take NY-14A—it’s a beautiful drive and puts you right in the heart of wine country. You’ll be about 90 minutes from Rochester or Syracuse, and just 30 minutes from Watkins Glen. It’s an easy, scenic trip either way.
- Flying? I’ve flown into Elmira (ELM) and Rochester (ROC) before—both work great. Once you land, renting a car is a must. It’s the best way to explore the lakes, wineries, and those backroads that feel like your own private escape.
- Public transit? To be honest, it’s limited in this region. I’ve always driven, and I’d recommend you do the same—it gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, which is half the joy of being here.
Where to Stay
- The Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars – I’ve stayed here for a wine weekend, and it was just lovely. You get vineyard views, elegant rooms, and a top-notch restaurant all in one spot. If you’re after comfort and convenience, this is a great pick near Seneca Lake.
- Magnolia Place Bed and Breakfast – This cozy B&B is perfect if you want something intimate and homey. I still remember the breakfasts—fresh, hearty, and served with a smile. You’ll feel right at home here, and the location puts you close to several trails and wineries.
- Vacation Rentals & Cabins – Sometimes I just want something rustic and private, and that’s when I look for cabins or lake houses in the Dundee area. Whether you want a place by the water or tucked into the woods, there are tons of peaceful options around here.
Must-see if you are a first-time visitor:
- Finger Lakes Trail – I always tell first-timers to spend a little time hiking here. The trails are quiet, scenic, and offer beautiful views over rolling hills and forested valleys. I’ve done both quick loops and longer treks—and always felt refreshed afterward.
- Downtown Dundee – I love wandering through the village—it’s got that authentic small-town feel. You can pop into antique shops, grab a coffee, and chat with friendly locals. It’s simple, but that’s part of the charm.
- Climbing Bines Hop Farm – If you’re more into beer than wine (or want to mix it up like I do), this spot is a must. It’s got a relaxed atmosphere, great brews, and beautiful scenery just outside of town. I always end up staying longer than I planned.
