The Outer Banks have a rich maritime history, and many of their stories are told in the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. The museum's exhibits focus on topics like the area's shipwrecks, pirates, explorers, and involvement in the American Civil War; highlights include a German Enigma machine rescued from a sunken submarine during World War II and an exhibit on General Billy Mitchell. Special events and programs are held on a regular basis, including a daily scavenger hunt suitable for visitors of all ages. Admission is by donation.
