If you’re after New England charm, mountain air, and that warm, small-town welcome, I say head to Littleton, New Hampshire. After 25 years on the road as a travel writer, I’ve found few places that balance scenic beauty and genuine hospitality like this one. Nestled in the White Mountains, Littleton has become one of my favorite year-round escapes. Whether I’m grabbing coffee downtown, hiking a quiet trail, or chatting with friendly locals, there’s always something about this place that makes me want to stay longer. I think you’ll feel it too.

Best Time to Visit

From my own visits, I’ve found that May through October is when Littleton truly shines. You’ll love the wildflowers and hiking trails in summer—and if you're into fall foliage like I am, you’ll be in awe come early October. That’s when the leaves explode in color and every scenic drive feels like a postcard. But don’t write off winter—I’ve bundled up here for snowshoeing and quiet evenings by the fire, and the cozy mountain-town vibe is hard to beat.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive in from Boston—it’s about 2.5 hours, mostly highway, and incredibly scenic as you near the mountains. If you're coming from Concord, it's a straight 1.5-hour shot. I promise, the drive sets the tone for the trip.
  • By Air: When I’ve flown, I’ve used either Manchester-Boston (MHT) or Burlington (BTV)—both airports are roughly two hours away by car. I recommend renting a car so you can explore the area at your own pace.
  • By Bus: I’ve tried taking Concord Coach Lines into nearby towns before. It’s doable, but you’ll need a taxi or rental car for that final leg into Littleton. Driving really is the easiest way to soak in the area.

Where to Stay

  • Thayers Inn – This historic downtown gem feels like a step back in time. I’ve stayed here for the charm and the unbeatable location—shops and restaurants are literally outside your door. You’ll love the vintage character.
  • Hampton Inn Littleton – When I want something modern and reliable, I stay here. You’ll get free breakfast, an indoor pool, and a short drive to downtown. It’s clean, easy, and perfect for families too.
  • Adair Country Inn & Restaurant – This one’s my go-to for special weekends. Located in nearby Bethlehem, it’s elegant and peaceful, with stunning views and one of the best dinners I’ve ever had in the region. If you’re celebrating or just want to relax in style, you’ll love it.
