Looking for classic New England charm and a touch of Revolutionary War history? I’d suggest you make your way to Exeter. Every time I visit, I’m drawn in by the leafy streets, local art galleries, and the kind of walkable downtown that invites you to slow down. You’ll find cozy cafés, unique shops, and a real sense of heritage in this hidden gem. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a relaxed weekend retreat, Exeter always delivers something special.
Best Time to Visit
In my experience, the best time to visit Exeter is from late spring through fall—roughly May through October. That’s when the weather is perfect for exploring on foot, checking out the farmers market, or taking a historical walking tour. I especially love it in autumn, when the trees burst into color and the whole town feels like a postcard. Winter has its own charm too, with festive events and cozy vibes around every corner.
How to Get There
- By Car: I usually drive in via NH Route 101. It’s just 20 minutes from Portsmouth and about an hour from Boston, so it’s an easy and scenic trip whether you’re coming from the coast or the city.
- By Train: If you’re not up for driving, I recommend taking Amtrak’s Downeaster. I’ve used it before to get from Boston to Exeter, and it’s a relaxing ride with lovely views along the way.
- By Air: I’ve flown into both Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and Logan Airport. Either one will work, but Logan is about an hour’s drive while Manchester is a little closer at around 45 minutes.
Where to Stay
- Exeter Inn – I love staying here when I want that mix of history and comfort. Located on the Phillips Exeter Academy campus, it has elegant rooms and a cozy tavern where I’ve enjoyed some memorable dinners.
- Hampton Inn & Suites Exeter – This is my go-to when I’m looking for convenience. You’ll find modern amenities, friendly service, and it’s just a short stroll to downtown shops and restaurants.
- Inn by the Bandstand – If you’re like me and enjoy a more luxurious, personalized stay, this place is a gem. It’s housed in an 1809 mansion and offers warm service, beautiful rooms, and one of the best locations right in the heart of town.
