If you're dreaming of a peaceful escape tucked in the White Mountains, I can’t recommend Bethlehem, New Hampshire enough. I’ve wandered its quiet downtown, browsed the art galleries, and taken in those sweeping views—it’s the kind of place that stays with you. Whether you’re craving a scenic hike, a creative recharge, or just some fresh mountain air, you’ll find that this little North Country gem delivers in the most relaxing way.

Best Time to Visit

In my experience, May through October is when Bethlehem truly shines. You’ll love the warm weather for hiking and checking out local festivals, and I always make time to dine outside with the mountains as my backdrop. If you’re like me and fall is your favorite season, you’ll be blown away by the foliage—it’s absolutely magical in the White Mountains. And if you’re a winter adventurer, you’ll find nearby skiing and snowshoe trails that make the cold worth it.

How to Get There

  • Driving? I usually take U.S. Route 302 or I-93—it’s about 2.5 hours from Boston and just over 3 hours from Portland, Maine. The views along the way are gorgeous, especially as you get closer to the mountains.
  • By train: There’s no direct line to Bethlehem, but I’ve taken Amtrak to White River Junction, Vermont (around 1.5 hours away), and picked up a rental car there. It’s a scenic drive through small towns and forests.
  • Flying in? I recommend flying into Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT) or Portland International Jetport (PWM). Both are 2–2.5 hours away, and you’ll enjoy the quiet country roads as you make your way up.

Where to Stay

  • Adair Country Inn & Restaurant – I stayed here once for a long weekend, and it was unforgettable. You’ll love the elegant rooms, the food is fantastic, and the mountain views from the property are just stunning. It’s my go-to for a special occasion or romantic escape.
  • The Wayside Inn – If you’re looking for something cozy and close to hiking trails, this inn is a gem. I loved waking up to the sound of the river and being able to walk straight from the inn into downtown or nearby trailheads. It’s got that warm, tucked-away feel I always look for in a mountain stay.
