When I needed artsy charm mixed with coastal beauty, I found it in Saugatuck on Lake Michigan. If you’re after that perfect balance of creativity and laid-back beach town energy, you’ll fall for this place too. I spent my days wandering galleries, tackling sand dunes, shopping local, and catching breathtaking sunsets on the water. Whether you’re sipping wine, paddling a kayak, or just soaking up downtown vibes, you’re in for a little slice of Michigan magic.
Best Time to Visit
I always aim for May through October—that’s when Saugatuck truly shines. If you visit in summer, you’ll get warm beach days and all the fun of bustling festivals and live music downtown. But don’t overlook fall. I love how the trees explode with color, the air turns crisp, and the crowds thin out. You’ll get cozy weekends and peaceful hikes all to yourself.
How to Get There
- By Car: I usually drive in from Grand Rapids—only about 45 minutes. If you’re coming from Chicago or Detroit, give yourself around 2.5 hours. It’s a smooth trip off I-196.
- By Plane: I’ve flown into Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) in Grand Rapids—it’s your best bet. From there, a car rental will get you to town in about an hour.
- By Bus: If you’re traveling light, you could bus to nearby Holland or South Haven. I’d still recommend renting a car though—it makes exploring a breeze.
Where to Stay
- Wickwood Inn – When I wanted something elegant and central, this was it. You’ll be steps from shops and galleries, plus the breakfasts are absolutely worth waking up for.
- Lake Shore Resort – This adults-only spot gave me serious unwind mode. Picture private beach access and Lake Michigan views that just don’t quit.
- The Hotel Saugatuck – If you’re traveling with your partner, I say go all in on romance here. I loved the fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and that dreamy breakfast-in-bed service.
Top Attractions
- Saugatuck Dunes State Park – I always start my mornings here. You’ll hike through shady trails, scale massive dunes, and land at a peaceful beach that feels worlds away.
- Oval Beach – When you want a proper beach day, this is the one. I’ve swum, sunbathed, and watched some of the best sunsets of my life here.
- Saugatuck Chain Ferry – You’ve got to try this—especially if you’re traveling with kids. I took the hand-cranked ferry across the Kalamazoo River and felt like I’d stepped back in time.
- Mount Baldhead Park – I’ll be honest, the climb up those 300+ steps is a workout, but the panoramic views are unbeatable. Afterward, you can hike right down to Oval Beach.
- Downtown Saugatuck – I never get tired of wandering the streets here. You’ll love the galleries, shops, and cafés—it’s all so welcoming and walkable, I felt instantly at home.
