If you’re craving lakeside fun and an easygoing vibe close to Kalamazoo, I’ve got just the place for you—Portage, Michigan. I’ve biked its scenic trails, watched sunsets over the water, and still found time for great food and shopping. You’ll love how Portage blends outdoor adventure with the convenience of a small city escape.

Best Time to Visit

From my experience, you’ll get the most out of Portage between May and October. I’ve spent warm summer days kayaking and enjoying outdoor festivals, and you can too. Visit in fall and you’ll pedal through tunnels of foliage I swear look painted. I’ve even come in winter for a quiet, snowy stroll and found the peaceful charm hard to beat.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually zip in off I-94 or US-131—it’s only ten minutes south of Kalamazoo and about two hours from Chicago or Detroit. You’ll be out of traffic and onto the trails before you know it.
  • By Air: I love the convenience of Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO). It’s right in Portage, so you’ll land and reach your hotel in minutes.
  • By Train: If you prefer rail, take Amtrak to nearby Kalamazoo. I’ve grabbed a quick rideshare from the station, and you’ll be at the lake in no time.

Where to Stay

  • Courtyard by Marriott Kalamazoo Portage – I stay here when I want a comfy room, pool access, and an easy hop onto the highway.
  • Hampton Inn Kalamazoo – This is my go-to for a family trip. You’ll appreciate the free breakfast and quick access to local attractions.
  • Airbnb & Vacation Rentals – When I’m after lakefront mornings or a roomy townhouse, I book a local rental. You’ll find options perfect for couples or the whole crew.
