Traverse City is located along Grand Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan and is best known as the United States' top producer of tart cherries, home to a weeklong National Cherry Festival each July. The city is a leading center for arts and culture in Michigan, home to the Victorian-style City Opera House, the indigenous-focused Dennos Museum Center, and the Traverse Symphony Orchestra.

47 acres of outdoor recreational opportunities are offered at Traverse City State Park, which features more than 250 overnight campsites. The region is also a noted viticultural area, home to more than 50 wineries offering tastings and tours for visitors.
