1. Cranbrook Art Museum

The Cranbrook Art Museum is part of the Cranbrook Educational Community founded by George and Ellen Booth. It focuses on modern and contemporary arts and crafts, design and architecture. It was started with part of George Cranbrook's own art and artifact collection and studios for weaving, printing, cabinet making and ironworks. The museum is open from May to November and hosts several exhibitions of its collections. Programs include workshops, family activities, school outings, lectures and talks. The shop sells a variety of memorabilia.

2. Cranbrook Institute of Science - Michigan's Museum of Natural History

The museum, situated on the historic Cranbrook campus, seeks to bring together art, education and science. It promotes scientific literacy through several outreach programs, targeted at all ages. There are summer camps and other seasonal activities, field trips and traveling exhibitions. A planetarium and observatory bring the cosmos to life and fossils and dinosaurs can be studied at the Discovery Center. The museum is set in large, wooded parklands and boasts a science shop and a Reflection Café, overlooking the pond. Cranbrook Institute of Science - Michigan's Museum of Natural History is open 7 days a week and is available for hosting private and corporate events.

3. Cranbrook House and Gardens

Cranbrook house was the home of George and Ellen Booth and their family. George made his fortune in ironworks and then in publishing. The couple bought a farm in the early 1900s, intending to spend summers there but soon moved out of Detroit city and were the first full-time residents in the area.

George was a patron of the American Arts and Crafts movement and commissioned many tapestries, wood carvings, artworks and metal items from craftsman across the country. Cranbrook House and Gardens are open to the public for tours and private functions from May to October.

4. Franklin Cider Mill

The Franklin Cider Mill was opened in 1832 and used as a gristmill. It has been in the hands of the Peltz family since 1966 and now produces apple cider. Johnny 'Appleseed' Chapman, born in 1774, is the person to thank for the many orchards across the USA. His ambition was to plant so many apple trees that no child would go hungry. He got his apple seeds from the cider mills. Franklin Mill sells apple, cider, cider donuts, apple pies and apple preserves. They also sell fresh vegetables, farm meats and cheese. They are open from around Labor Day to Thanksgiving.

5. Affleck House

The house's full title is Gregor S. and Elizabeth B. Affleck House. The couple commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design and construct the dwelling in the early 1940s. It is one of about 25 Usonian houses still in existence, depicting the character of the New World. The house was built into the slope of the land and features a flat roof, skylights, a cantilevered living area and a two story kitchen. It was donated to the Lawrence Technological University in 1978 as a teaching resource. It has subsequently been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Tours are conducted once a month from May to October.

6. Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research

The Center's collections of photographs, manuscripts, artifacts, architectural drawings and posters are distributed across the Cranbrook Educational Community. Their flagship Three Homes Tour takes visitors to Cranbrook House, a Tudor Revival country home; Saarinen house, an Art Deco house; and Smith House, a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian home decorated with student art from the 1970s. It is a walking tour so stamina is required and children under 8 are not permitted. The Center also offers lectures, away trips, farm-to-table dinners and concerts.

7. Oaklands Hill Country Club

This private country club was founded by two Ford Company executives in 1916. Through the years, several automotive legends have been members. There are 2 golf courses at the club and between them have hosted 35 championships, including the US Open, PGA Championship and Ryder Cup. The original clubhouse was the homestead on the original farm land and the pro shop used to be the chicken coop. The facilities have been upgraded substantially since then. Guest players are welcome. The Evan Scholars Foundation offers university tuition and housing for four years to caddies who are eligible.

8. Eddie Merlot's

The Eddie Merlot's restaurant chain can be found in eight states. The restaurants all have a distinct atmosphere. They specialize in fine steaks and seafood and are renowned for their wine list. Steaks are aged for 21 days, leaving them tender and flavorful. Wagyu steak, with its marbled texture is a recent addition. At the Bloomfield Hills restaurant there are several menus to choose from, depending on the occasion. Similarly private functions can choose from a range of catering options. For weddings and similar occasions, the Champagne Menu is the premier choice. There are five dining areas to choose from.

9. Pizza Papalis

There are 9 Pizza Papalis restaurants in Michigan and Ohio. The concept was developed in the 1980s after a worldwide search for the right combination of ingredients. The recipe for the pizza crust was discovered in Kansas, the cheeses are from Wisconsin and the tomatoes and sauce are Italian. Thin crust and deep dish pizzas are on the menu, as are calzones, strombolis, pastas and ciabattas. There are various catering options, all taken from the standard menu.

10. Leo's Coney Island

Two Greek immigrant brothers, Peter and Leo Stassinopoulos, came to the USA with little money, no English and an American Dream. They worked at various jobs until finding the restaurant trade. In 1972, they invested in their first Coney Island style restaurant. Today there are more than 60 Leo's Coney Island venues in their restaurant chain. The basic menu has been given a Greek twist with the brothers' classic Greek salad dressing which is now also available for sale in supermarkets. Catering is offered on site or delivered. Trays or meals and classic Greek desserts are on the menu.
