Looking for a serene Great Lakes getaway filled with shipwrecks, lighthouses, and small-town charm? I’d say pack your bags and head to Alpena! I’ve visited a few times, and each trip left me feeling recharged and totally in awe of the scenery. Sitting right on the edge of Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay, Alpena is one of those places where you can kayak over shipwrecks in the morning, tour a lighthouse by afternoon, and unwind by the water as the sun goes down. If you’re craving peace, beauty, and a bit of maritime history, you’re going to love it here.
Best Time to Visit
I usually plan my trips to Alpena between late spring and early fall—May through September is prime time. The weather’s warm but not too hot, perfect for kayaking, hiking, and lounging by the beach. I especially love early fall here; the foliage is stunning and the crowds thin out a bit. If you’re into photography or just want a quieter experience, that’s the sweet spot.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I’ve driven in from both Mackinaw City and Bay City—it’s an easy and scenic ride along US-23 or M-32. Expect about 2 hours from Mackinaw or 3 from Bay City. I always enjoy the lake views along the way.
- By Air: Alpena County Regional Airport (APN) is small but super convenient. I’ve flown through Detroit Metro (DTW) to get here—it’s quick and smooth if you’re coming from out of state.
- By Ferry: If you’re already visiting Mackinac Island and want to extend your trip, I totally recommend adding Alpena to your route. It’s a few hours by car from the ferry ports, and you’ll get to explore more of Michigan’s Sunrise Coast along the way.
Where to Stay
- Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alpena-Downtown – I stayed here last time and loved the location. It’s right downtown, close to the waterfront, shops, and restaurants. If you like being in the heart of the action (but still want peace and quiet), this is a solid choice.
- Big Bear Lodge – This place gives off major Northwoods charm. I’ve recommended it to friends who wanted something cozy and a little more rustic—it’s perfect if you want quick lake access and that woodsy, cabin-style atmosphere.
- Island View Resort – I stayed in one of their lakeside cabins during a summer road trip and it was such a peaceful retreat. You’ll love it if you’re into fishing, family time, or just sitting on a porch watching the water. It’s simple, but that’s what makes it special.
