Harpers Ferry National Historic Park is located in and around the historic town of Harpers Ferry at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. While the town of Harpers Ferry is in West Virginia, the park is shared by the states of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Brown, Meriwether Lewis, "Stonewall" Jackson, and Frederick Douglass are just some of the important historic figures who played a role in the history of this place as well as the nation. Harpers Ferry witnessed the arrival of the first American railroad, the attack on slavery by John Brown, the surrender of Federal troops in the Civil War, and the integration and education of former slaves in one of the local schools.
