Another South Berwick historic gem, the Sarah Orne Jewett House was declared a national historic Landmark in 1887. Originally the home of her grandparents, the house was the birthplace of Sarah Orne Jewett, and was where she and her family lived for several years. If you are unfamiliar with this flamboyant writer, who appears to have carved out a life of artistic freedom in the midst of the straight-laced Victorian era, you will love touring this property and learning its secrets. The Greek Revival House next door is where Sarah later lived with her parents and is now used as a Visitor’s Center.

Fogarty’s Restaurant is something of a legend in South Berwick. It all started back in
1960, when Tom and Francis Fogarty decided to open a simple burger & fries restaurant in the town. Soon they were serving up much more than just burgers and chips and their fried chicken and onion rings became the talk of the town. When you visit Fogarty’s today, you can still feast on all the old-fashioned favorites as well as a whole host of more contemporary dishes. Their signature onion rings and sweet potato fries are still on the menu and just as popular now as they were 60 years ago. Today these staples are joined by farm-fresh salads, delicious seafood dinners, burgers, steaks and much more.
