The small town of South Berwick was settled in 1631, on a tidal estuary called the Salmon Falls River. Here the pioneering early settles built one of the first water-powered mills in the U.S. As you can imagine, the town is literally bristling with historic buildings and homes. You can easily admire most of these by taking a self-guided walking tour through the historic downtown area. Many of the early buildings are now home to retail outlets and restaurants. Historic highlights of your visit should include the Hamilton House and the Sarah Orne Jewett House. Outdoor activities include hiking the trails in the Agamenticus and Vaughn Woods and winter skiing at Powderhouse Hill.
