When I’m planning a trip to Acadia but want a quieter, cozier base, I head to Ellsworth—and I think you’ll love it too. This little riverside city has the perfect mix of coastal charm and local convenience. I’ve wandered the historic downtown, browsed indie shops, and grabbed coffee by the Union River, all without the Bar Harbor crowds. Whether you’re off to explore Acadia or just looking for a relaxing place to unwind, Ellsworth makes it easy to slow down and enjoy Maine at its best.

Best Time to Visit

I always visit between May and October. You’ll get the best weather for hiking, kayaking, and exploring the park. Summer’s lively and perfect for getting out on the water, while I absolutely love the fall—those leaf colors are unreal. I’ve also come in winter when it’s quiet and snowy, and if you’re up for a peaceful, off-season getaway, it’s surprisingly magical.

How to Get There

  • If you are traveling by car: I usually drive in on U.S. Route 1 or ME-3—Ellsworth’s about 30 minutes from Bar Harbor and 45 from Bangor. It’s a beautiful drive either way, especially in the fall.
  • By Air: I’ve flown into Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport (BHB), which is just 15 minutes away. Bangor International (BGR) is another good option, especially if you’re coming from farther away.
  • By Bus: Concord Coach Lines and local shuttles have made it easy for me to get here without a car. You’ll find service between Bangor, Ellsworth, and Bar Harbor—it’s convenient and stress-free.

Where to Stay

  • Comfort Inn Ellsworth - Bar Harbor – I’ve stayed here for its easy downtown access. You’ll get clean, comfy rooms and free breakfast—great for fueling up before a day in the park.
  • Ramada by Wyndham Ellsworth – This is my pick when I’m traveling with family. You’ll appreciate the pool, fitness center, and a location that makes exploring super simple.
  • Twilite Motel – When I want a budget-friendly spot with local charm, I stay here. You’ll enjoy the peaceful setting and that classic retro roadside vibe—it’s a hidden gem.
