Craving quiet coves, coastal charm, and a bit of artistic soul? I say head to Blue Hill, Maine! I’ve found this peaceful village along Maine’s Down East coast to be one of those rare places that feels instantly calming. It’s tucked between forested hills and harbors, and what I love most is the creative energy—everywhere you turn, there’s art, music, or something hand-crafted. Whether I’m kayaking, gallery-hopping, or digging into fresh lobster by the bay, Blue Hill always gives me that deep-breath, New England-style reset.

What I Love to Do in Blue Hill, ME:

  • Blue Hill Mountain – I’ve hiked to the summit more than once, and those panoramic views of the bay and village are always worth the climb.
  • Blue Hill Bay – I’ve paddled here in the early morning when the water’s like glass. You’ll see lobster boats and pine-lined shores—it’s classic coastal Maine.
  • Jonathan Fisher House – I loved stepping into the life of this early 1800s minister, artist, and thinker. If you enjoy history with a personal touch, this one’s a gem.
  • Blue Hill Heritage Trust Trails – These quiet trails are my go-to for peaceful walks and a little birdwatching. You’ll feel completely off the grid in the best way.
  • Blue Hill Public Library – I stop in every time I’m in town. The architecture is gorgeous, and I always enjoy the rotating art exhibits—it really feels like the heart of the community.

When I Think You Should Visit Blue Hill, ME

From my experience, the best time to visit is between late spring and early fall (May to October). That’s when everything comes alive—markets, music, galleries, and perfect weather for being outside. I especially love fall here. The foliage lights up the coastline, and the crisp air is just what I need after summer’s buzz.

How I Get to Blue Hill, ME (And How You Can Too)

  • By Car: I usually drive in via ME Route 15. Blue Hill is about 40 minutes from Bar Harbor and around an hour from Bangor. It’s a scenic ride either way.
  • By Air: If you’re flying in, I recommend Bangor International Airport (BGR). I’ve rented a car there for the drive to the coast—super easy and scenic.

Where I Recommend Staying in Blue Hill, ME

  • Blue Hill Inn – This historic inn in the village center is one of my favorites. Cozy rooms and homemade gourmet breakfasts—what more could you ask for?
  • Barncastle Inn – I stayed here on a last-minute trip, and it’s a charming, pet-friendly spot with a relaxed pub and fantastic wood-fired pizza. You’ll feel right at home.
  • The Oakland House Seaside Resort – If you want something rustic and close to nature, I recommend their beachfront cabins. I stayed in one overlooking Eggemoggin Reach, and I still think about those peaceful mornings.
