The Fort Leavenworth Army Installation is a 5,600-acre military post on the Frontier Military Scenic Byway that was built in 1827 and used as a stopover for pioneers moving westwards. Historically known as ‘the Intellectual Center of the Army,’ post is the oldest active United States Army and permanent settlement in Kansas west of Washington. The base also housed the African-American soldiers of the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Today, the Fort Leavenworth Army Installation is the home of the US Army Combined Arms Center (CAC).
