Museo Della Grande Guerra 1914-1918 (The Museum of World War I) is located in theTre Sassi fort on the road to the Passo di Valparola in the comune of Cortina d'Ampezzo.

It is one of three museum in Trentino that commemorate the First World War in Dolomite region. Most of the war relics in the museum were collected during the summers when the big Marmolada glacier recedes, revealing what was left after the war. Because they were frozen under the glacier, discovered bodies of soldiers and various artefacts are in perfect condition. The exhibition contains about 700 exhibits collected by Andrea De Bernardin, who lives in the area.

Some of the most interesting pieces are the sewing kits every soldier used to carry, soldiers’ dog tags, scalpels, weapons, and even a machine gun and Schwarzlose Maxim. There is also a typewriter, a field phone, and much more. The museum is a reminder of the bitter war fought in the Dolomites, known as “the white war.”
