Built in the 1960s by the former German Democratic Republic, the Fernsehturm, or TV Tower, was designed to exemplify the characteristics of socialism and communism in appearance while broadcasting GDR television programs to East Berlin. The spherical design of the Fernsehturm tower was intended to remind citizens of the Soviet Sputnik satellites, and the tower was intended to be lit up in red, the color of socialism. A tower that once stood as a symbol of the Iron Curtain now offers tourists a spectacular view of the city, as well as a bar and restaurant with a 360-degree view.
