The Old Montana Prison Complex in Deer Lodge, Montana is home to five different museums housed within historic, rustic prison walls. A visit to the museum complex transports guests to the past, to the time of the first territorial prison located in the western part of the country. The complex consists of the Old Montana Prison, the Montana Auto Museum, Yesterday’s Playthings, the Frontier Montana Museum, and the Powell County Museum. One fee covers admission to all five museums. The prison itself was built during the 1800’s by convicts and the museum shares what life was like for the prisoners.

The Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in Deer Lodge dates back to the year 1862. This was when Johnny Grant, a fur trader from Canada, established the original ranch. In 1972, the current ranch was established as an appreciation of the western cattle industry, a thriving part of Montana and the western United States since the middle of the 1880’s. Covering a total of 1,618 acres, visitors at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch can take a guided tour of the ranch house during the year, participate in a variety of ranger-led activities, or take a self-guided tour of the ranch.
