Need a spiritual retreat or cultural escape in northern New Mexico? I highly recommend heading to Chimayó! Every time I visit, I feel a deep sense of peace and connection. Nestled in the Sangre de Cristo foothills, Chimayó is a place where history, faith, and tradition come together in the most beautiful way. Whether you’re drawn to sacred sites, traditional arts, or just need a moment to slow down, you’ll find something deeply meaningful here.

Chimayó, NM Highlights:

  • El Santuario de Chimayó: I always begin my visit here. This humble 19th-century adobe chapel is famous for its “holy dirt,” which many believe has healing powers. You can feel the reverence the moment you step inside—it’s truly a place of quiet reflection.
  • Ortega’s Weaving Shop: I never leave without stopping by Ortega’s. You’ll love seeing the weavers at work and browsing the handwoven rugs and blankets—they’re not just souvenirs, they’re heirlooms.
  • Chimayó Museum: I’ve learned so much about the area’s Hispano heritage here. You can explore artifacts and stories in a restored adobe home—it’s small but so rich with history.
  • Trujillo’s Weaving Shop: This is another gem. I’ve picked up some of the most beautiful pieces here, and you’ll meet artisans who are continuing generations-old weaving traditions.
  • Santo Niño Chapel: Tucked right next to the main sanctuary, this little chapel always touches my heart. You’ll see walls covered in children’s shoes and milagros—it’s intimate, emotional, and deeply spiritual.

Best Time to Visit Chimayó, NM

From my experience, the best times to go are spring and fall (April–June and September–October). If you visit during Holy Week, you’ll witness one of the most moving pilgrimages in the Southwest. Fall brings golden cottonwoods and cooler air that’s perfect for long, reflective walks. Summer is livelier and warm, while winter has a special stillness—ideal if you’re seeking solitude and quiet time.

How to Get to Chimayó, NM

  • Driving in? That’s what I usually do—it’s the best way to enjoy the scenic routes. You’ll find Chimayó along NM-76, about 40 minutes from Santa Fe and 25 minutes from Española. I always take the High Road to Taos—it’s breathtaking and full of small village charm.
  • Flying in? Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) is the closest, but Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) works well too. From either, you can rent a car and enjoy the peaceful drive north—I think you’ll love how the landscape changes as you go.
  • Taking the bus? I’ve found options are pretty limited, so I definitely recommend having a car. It gives you the freedom to explore nearby towns, scenic byways, and hidden chapels you might otherwise miss.

Where to Stay in Chimayó, NM

  • Casa Escondida Bed & Breakfast – I’ve stayed here more than once, and it’s just the kind of peaceful escape I need. You’ll wake up to mountain views, cozy rooms with fireplaces, and homemade breakfast. It feels tucked away but still close to everything.
  • Hotel Chimayó de Santa Fe – When I want to stay in Santa Fe but still feel connected to Chimayó’s spirit, this is my go-to. You’ll love the handcrafted decor and cultural details—it’s like a tribute to Chimayó in the heart of the city.
  • El Mesón del Espíritu Santo – For a truly reflective stay, this rustic retreat space is a gem. I’ve stayed here for a quiet weekend of prayer and writing, and I think you’ll appreciate the simplicity and calm. Just be sure to call ahead for availability—it’s intentionally low-key.
