Looking for waterfront charm, California history, and an artistic vibe? I’ve found that Benicia has a little bit of everything I love in a weekend escape. Tucked along the Carquinez Strait, it’s one of those places that feels like a true hidden gem. Whether you’re wandering the historic downtown, checking out local art galleries, or soaking up views along the water, Benicia offers a relaxed break that still feels rich with culture and history. You’ll leave feeling inspired and refreshed—I always do.

Best Time to Visit

Personally, I think spring and fall are the best times to visit. I’ve enjoyed warm, breezy walks by the water in April and taken in the fall light during October—both times were perfect. The weather is sunny but not too hot, making it great for exploring. Summers are beautiful too, especially with those ocean breezes keeping things comfortable. And if you don’t mind a quieter vibe, winter is crisp, peaceful, and a nice time to slow down and unwind.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive in—it’s an easy trip. Benicia is right off I-680 and takes about 35 minutes from Oakland, or just around an hour if you’re coming from San Francisco or Sacramento. It’s a great day-trip distance.
  • By Ferry: Benicia doesn’t have its own ferry stop, but if you’re up for a scenic detour, I’ve used the Vallejo Ferry (just 15 minutes away) to connect to San Francisco. It’s a fun way to start or end your trip.
  • By Air: If you're flying in, you’ve got options. Oakland, San Francisco, and Sacramento airports are all within about 60 to 75 minutes. I usually pick whichever has the best fare or flight time—any of them will get you here without much hassle.

Where to Stay

  • Union Hotel Benicia – I stayed here on a weekend getaway and loved the vintage charm. It’s right downtown, so you can walk to shops, restaurants, and galleries with ease. The historic feel adds something special to your stay.
  • Shorelight Inn – If you’re after peace and water views, this is the one. I spent a night here and couldn’t get enough of the cozy vibe and the sound of the water just outside my window. It’s perfect for a slower pace.
  • Holiday Inn Express Benicia – I’ve recommended this spot to friends who want something modern and reliable. It’s just a short drive from the historic district and makes a great base if you’re exploring more of the area.
