Looking to unplug and breathe in some fresh air, surrounded by beauty and just the right amount of quirk? That’s exactly what I found on Beaver Island—and I think you will too. Tucked into the northern part of Lake Michigan, this island feels like a world of its own. I spent my days on quiet beaches, biking under tree canopies, and falling asleep to the sound of waves and wind through the trees. And the island’s history? Fascinatingly odd in the best way. If you’re craving solitude, outdoor adventure, and a little small-town magic, Beaver Island hits the mark.
Best Time to Visit
I’d say the sweet spot is late spring through early fall (May–October). I visited in summer, when the water was perfect for swimming and the days felt endless. You’ll love biking the quiet roads, kayaking in clear coves, or just relaxing with a view of the lake. Fall brings fiery colors and fewer people—I went once in early October and it felt like I had the island to myself. Winter’s beautiful too, but be ready for limited access—ferries stop and flights depend on the weather.
How to Get There
- By Ferry: I’ve taken the Beaver Island Boat Company ferry from Charlevoix—it’s a scenic, 2-hour ride that really sets the tone for your getaway. It runs seasonally from late April to October and takes both passengers and vehicles.
- By Plane: When I didn’t want to wait on ferry schedules, I flew with Island Airways. The 30-minute flight from Charlevoix to Beaver Island Airport (BIV) is quick and offers amazing views of Lake Michigan from above. Fresh Air Aviation is another great option—both operate year-round.
- By Private Boat: I haven’t done this myself, but friends who sail say docking at St. James Harbor’s municipal marina is easy and welcoming. It’s a great base to explore the island on foot or by bike.
Where to Stay
- Beaver Island Lodge – This is where I stayed for a quiet, comfortable trip. You’ll love the sunset views and the on-site restaurant—it feels like a lakeside retreat with a touch of elegance.
- The Harbor View Motel – Perfect if you’re traveling with family or want to stay right in St. James. I liked how close it was to everything—beaches, cafés, even the ferry dock.
- Beaver Island Retreat – Want to glamp in style? I haven’t stayed here yet, but I toured it—and wow. You get safari-style tents with real beds and full bathrooms, all tucked into the woods. It’s luxury meets wilderness in the best way.
- Emerald Isle Inn – This is a great walking-distance spot if you want to be near restaurants and the museum. Friends of mine stayed here and loved the central location and friendly vibe.
- Camping at Bill Wagner Campground – I’ve camped here and it was rustic and peaceful—right on the beach with fire pits and vault toilets. You’ll want to bring your own water and supplies, but the lake views at night are absolutely worth it.
