When I was craving crisp mountain air, cozy cabins, and the simple joy of picking apples straight from the tree, I found my way to Ellijay—and I think you’ll fall for it too. Tucked into the North Georgia mountains, Ellijay feels like a hidden gem with just the right balance of small-town charm and natural beauty. Whether you’re sipping cider at a fall festival, hiking through the Chattahoochee National Forest, or just curling up in a cabin with a mountain view, Ellijay makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the moment.
Best Time to Visit
If you’re asking me, September through November is hands-down the best time to visit. I’ve wandered orchards during peak apple season, and the fall colors across the hills are absolutely magical. But don’t count out spring or summer—when wildflowers are blooming and the rivers are perfect for tubing, I always find plenty to do. And winter? Fewer crowds, cool mountain mornings, and nothing beats sipping coffee by the fire in a cozy cabin.
How to Get There
- Driving? I usually take GA-515 north out of Atlanta—it’s an easy 90-minute drive with beautiful scenery once you get into the mountains. If you're coming from Chattanooga, it’s just about an hour.
- Flying? The closest major airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL). From there, you’ll need a car—it’s about 1 hour and 45 minutes to Ellijay, and the drive is part of the experience.
- Heads-up: You’ll definitely want your own car here. I’ve driven to orchards, trailheads, roadside farm stands, and a few hidden gems you’d miss without wheels. It’s the kind of place meant to be explored slowly and on your own terms.
Where to Stay
- Ellijay River House Bed & Breakfast – I stayed here for a quiet weekend and didn’t want to leave. You’ll love the gourmet breakfasts, peaceful river views, and being just a short walk from downtown shops and restaurants.
- Mountain Resort Cabins – If you’re after seclusion and that true mountain-cabin feel, this is the way to go. I’ve soaked in hot tubs under the stars, watched deer wander past in the mornings, and curled up by the fireplace at night—it’s the perfect rustic escape.
- Comfort Inn & Suites – For something convenient and kid-friendly, I’ve stayed here during family trips. Clean, close to everything, and a good base for apple-picking or hopping around town—it gets the job done with no fuss.
