Nestled on the shores of Biscayne Bay in the affluent Coconut Grove neighborhood of South Miami, the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens , previously known as Villa Vizcaya, is a rambling Italianate mansion that once belonged to industrialist James Deering, of the Deering McCormick-International Harvester fortune.

Built in the 1910s in a time when Miami was choked with trees instead of traffic, the beautifully maintained 34-room mansion is surrounded by acres of serene European-style gardens packed with ornate fountains and statuary, some of which date back to antiquity.

The villa features an ornamental breakwater that was carved out of Florida limestone in the shape of an oversize Venetian barge and is studded with a variety of decorative sculpture – the pièce de résistance of this magnificent abode.
