When visiting Fort Ward, do not be alarmed by the number of fierce looking people in ancient uniforms carrying what look like antique weapons. The fort is a favorite location among the re-enactors, and they help visitors understand the role the fort played in history.
The fort is very well preserved and offers a glimpse into life during the Civil War, the lives of soldiers, and the suffering in the occupied Alexandria. Fort Ward Museum offers interpretative programs, lectures, and tours, and it contains many fascinating artifacts that allow visitors to better understand the time period and life in the fort.
