Xocolatl Chocolate was founded in 2004 by Elaine Read and Matt Weyandt, whose love of traveling brought them to Costa Rica's jungle regions following the birth of their second child.

In Puerto Viejo, the couple learned how to prepare traditional dark chocolate free of filler ingredients, crafted from high-quality cacao beans. Today, their small-batch chocolate shop features chocolates made from beans sourced throughout South America and Africa, prepared only with organic cane sugar in single-origin bars.

Flavored bar options include the blood orange-infused Love and Happiness, nut and jam-filled Go Nuts, coconut milk and jerk-flavored Soul Rebel, and crushed espresso-filled Wide-Eyed. Tastings and tours are offered throughout the week, showcasing the company's chocolate-making processes and lasting approximately one hour.
