One of the most iconic buildings in Rijeka is the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral, located in one of the most beautiful 19th-century buildings in the city. The building was originally a palace that was built to be the living quarters for the king's emissaries and governors. The museum has a large number of artifacts related to the culture and history of the city and Primorsko-goranska County. The collection covers the period from pre-historical times to today. There is a large collection of items related to aquatic forms of transportation as well as a reconstructed historical ship, nautical instruments, maps, and more that pay homage to the region's sea-faring culture.
