The square has been significant landmark since the 13th century, initially containing the King's Mews before they were moved to Buckingham Palace, and has been used for community gatherings and political demonstrations over the centuries.

Today, the square is a must-see destination for visitors to London and has the 169-foot Nelson's Column at its center, guarded by four iconic statues of lions. The Fourth Plinth hosts an array of contemporary art, and at Christmas time, the square is home to the largest Christmas tree in London. Trafalgar Square is also home to thousands of pigeons.
