Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and it has been incorporated as a city since 1742. The city was the capital of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War and the site of Patrick Henry’s famous “give me liberty or give me death” speech during the American Revolution. It is a city known for its magnificent architecture, significant monuments, museums, and arts and culture.

The Virginia Repertory Theater is the largest company in Virginia, and crowds come to see performances of it and of the Richmond Symphony, the Virginia Opera, and the Richmond Ballet Corps. Edgar Allan Poe made his home here, and a museum containing artifacts and some of his writing is a popular tourist destination. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has fine collections covering 5,000 years of art from around the world.
