Ready for live music, mountain views, and rich Southern culture? Head to Tennessee! I recently explored the Volunteer State on a week-long road trip, and I was blown away by how much variety it packs—each region feels like its own adventure. From honky tonks and distilleries to peaceful trails and iconic landmarks, Tennessee is the ultimate blend of Americana charm and natural beauty.
Tennessee Highlights (My Personal Picks):
- For Music Fans: Explore Nashville's Honky Tonk Highway – I spent an evening hopping between bars with live music on Broadway. Don’t miss the rooftop at Tootsie’s or a tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame for a deeper dive into the city’s musical roots.
- For Outdoor Lovers: Hike Great Smoky Mountains National Park – I tackled a few trails near Clingmans Dome and Cade’s Cove—unforgettable views, misty forest air, and even a black bear sighting!
- For History Buffs: Visit Graceland in Memphis – Touring Elvis’s home was a surprisingly emotional experience. While in Memphis, I also visited the National Civil Rights Museum, which was incredibly powerful and well-curated.
- For Families: Spend a day at Dollywood – This park exceeded my expectations—great coasters, country charm, and tons of live entertainment. The cinnamon bread is worth the trip alone.
- For Whiskey Lovers: Tour the Jack Daniel’s Distillery – The Lynchburg distillery tour was both informative and atmospheric. Pro tip: book the tasting tour for a full experience.
Best Time to Visit Tennessee
I visited in early October, and the fall foliage in the Smokies was a dream. But spring (April–June) is also beautiful, with wildflowers and comfortable weather for walking tours and park visits. Summer is lively with music festivals and lake trips, while winter offers snow in the mountains and cozy city vibes with fewer crowds.
How to Get to Tennessee
- By Air: I flew into Nashville International Airport (BNA), but Memphis (MEM) and Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) are great options depending on your route.
- By Car: Tennessee is perfect for road tripping. I used I-40 as my main highway across the state and made stops in Nashville, Memphis, Pigeon Forge, and Chattanooga.
- By Train: If you’re heading to Memphis, Amtrak’s City of New Orleans line makes for a scenic ride down the Mississippi corridor.
Where to Stay in Tennessee (Tried & True):
- Recommended for Families: Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort (Pigeon Forge) – My friend’s family loved this spot. Great amenities, comfy rooms, and convenient access to the park.
- For Couples: The Peabody Memphis – Classic Southern charm in a downtown landmark. I stayed here and adored the lobby's vintage vibe and duck parade tradition.
- For Music Lovers: The Hermitage Hotel (Nashville) – Elegant, historic, and just steps from the action on Broadway. The rooms are spacious and the Oak Bar is a great spot for cocktails.
