If you’re looking for a place that has a little of everything—beaches, mountains, charming towns, and vibrant cities—I always tell people to head to North Carolina. I’ve been exploring this state for over 30 years as a travel writer and editor, and every time I return, I find something new that makes me fall in love all over again. You’ll go from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Outer Banks in a matter of hours, with lakes, lighthouses, wineries, and welcoming small towns in between.
You can dive into some of the best museums I’ve ever visited, hike to the top of Grandfather Mountain for panoramic views you’ll never forget, or step back in time at one of the many Civil War sites scattered across the state. Over the years, I’ve built up a list of my favorite North Carolina places and experiences—ones I keep coming back to—and I’m excited to share them with you below so you can enjoy them, too.
