Dreaming of rolling hills, Southern charm, and world-class horses? I say you should visit Lexington, Kentucky! I’ve wandered its scenic roads and soaked in the bluegrass beauty, and I think you’ll fall in love with the vibe here. Known as the “Horse Capital of the World,” Lexington offers a mix of rich heritage, vibrant culture, and bourbon-infused hospitality. Whether you're planning a quick weekend or a longer stay, it always feels like a treat to me.
Best Time to Visit
From my experience, spring and fall (April–June and September–October) are when Lexington truly shines. I’ve been there during spring racing season—it’s electric. You’ll feel the energy in the air. And if you visit in fall, you’ll get cooler temps, vibrant foliage, and some of the best bourbon festivals I’ve ever attended. Summer can be warm, but if you enjoy outdoor concerts and lively patios like I do, you’ll still have a great time.
How to Get There
- By Car: I usually drive in via I-64 or I-75—Lexington’s super accessible from places like Louisville and Cincinnati. You’ll enjoy the drive, especially when those rolling hills start to appear.
- By Air: Blue Grass Airport (LEX) is a breeze. I’ve landed there and been downtown in 15 minutes flat. If you’re flying in from a major U.S. city, chances are you’ll find a direct flight.
- By Bus: I’ve looked into Greyhound and Megabus for budget trips, and they’ll get you there just fine. Once you arrive, Lextran buses can help you get around town without much hassle.
Where to Stay
- 21c Museum Hotel Lexington – I stayed here once and couldn’t stop exploring the art. If you like modern design and being in the middle of it all, this one’s for you.
- The Campbell House Lexington – This place oozes Southern charm. I loved the historic feel with its fresh updates. You’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time—but with great cocktails.
- Origin Hotel Lexington – I checked this one out for a Keeneland weekend, and it was spot-on. If you want modern style with easy access to shopping and dining, I’d definitely recommend it.
