Most people I talk to know about Charleston or Asheville. But what you may not know is that Greenville blends Southern charm with mountain energy. Its walkable downtown, waterfalls, and food scene make it a hidden gem in the Upstate.
Looking for Southern charm, walkable downtown vibes, and mountain scenery? Head to Greenville! I discovered it nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it completely won me over. You’ll find a vibrant arts and food scene, scenic parks, and a charming historic downtown that’s perfect for wandering. Whether you’re biking along the Swamp Rabbit Trail or relaxing in Falls Park like I did, Greenville will surprise you in the best way.
Best Time to Visit
From my experience, the sweet spots to visit are March through May and September through November. Spring brought me colorful blooms and breezy temps, while fall delivered gorgeous foliage and ideal weather for outdoor dining and festivals. You’ll find summer warm and full of energy, and if you prefer fewer crowds, you’ll appreciate the quiet charm of Greenville’s mild winters.
How to Get There
- By Air: I flew into Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), just 20 minutes from downtown. You’ll find nonstop flights to many major cities, which made things super easy for me.
- By Car: If you’re driving, Greenville’s right off I-85. I’ve made the drive from Atlanta in just under two hours, and it’s only 1.5 hours from Charlotte.
- By Train: You can also take Amtrak’s Crescent Line. I haven’t tried it yet, but it runs between New York City and New Orleans, with a stop right in Greenville.
Where to Stay
- Grand Bohemian Lodge – I stayed here once and it’s absolutely stunning. You’ll love the lodge-style setting next to Falls Park, with upscale dining and incredible views.
- Aloft Greenville Downtown – If you like modern, walkable stays like I do, this is a great choice. It has a fun rooftop bar and puts you in the middle of everything.
- Hotel Domestique (Travelers Rest) – I haven’t stayed here yet, but it’s on my list. You’ll find a luxurious, European-style vibe just outside the city with a focus on cycling and mountain scenery.
