If you’re looking for a coastal town with classic New England charm, let me share a favorite of mine—East Lyme, Connecticut. I’ve strolled its scenic boardwalk, lingered over seafood dinners by the shore, and explored the history tucked into every corner of its villages, Niantic and Flanders. Whether you’re after beach days or a quiet maritime getaway, you’ll find this town wraps you up in a relaxed, seaside rhythm that’s hard to leave behind.
Best Time to Visit
Personally, I think late spring through early fall is the sweet spot. From May to September, the weather is just right for swimming, eating outside, or poking around the shops downtown. I’ve spent entire afternoons by the beach with an ice cream cone and no schedule, and you’ll probably want to do the same. If you prefer a quieter visit, try early fall. I’ve gone in October and still enjoyed mild temps, colorful leaves, and a little more space to myself.
How to Get There
- By Car: I usually drive in on I-95—it’s a scenic and easy route. You’ll be about 2 hours from NYC and just an hour from Providence. Not bad for a quick escape.
- By Train: If you’re coming by rail, Amtrak stops in New London, which is just a 15-minute ride away. I’ve used a taxi or rideshare from there and found it super simple.
- By Air: I’ve flown into Bradley International Airport (BDL) when visiting from farther out. It’s about a 90-minute drive, and once you’re out of the airport, the roads become more relaxing fast.
Where to Stay
- Niantic Inn – I’ve stayed here for its unbeatable location—right in downtown Niantic and just steps from the boardwalk. It’s cozy, clean, and puts you in the heart of everything.
- Oak Grove Beach Cabins – If you’re like me and love the idea of waking up to water views, this is a perfect pick. I once spent a long weekend in one of these cottages and barely needed to drive anywhere.
- Hotels in New London or Mystic – I’ve also stayed in nearby New London when I wanted more amenities or a resort-style vibe. It’s just a short drive back into East Lyme when you want that quieter beach-town feel.
