Tortuguero National Park is all about turtles. Situated within the Tortuguero Conservation Area in the northeastern part of the country, the park is a protected area for its rich biological diversity and ecosystems that support threatened flora and fauna species and home to a variety of turtle species that come here to spawn. Accessible only by air or sea, long, sandy beaches along the shores of the marshy islands are an ideal nesting ground for turtles, and every year sees thousands of Green Sea, leatherback, and Hawksbill Turtles making their way onto the shores. The best way to see the park is by boat – take guided tours around the island or rent canoes and kayaks (cayucas or botes) for a sightseeing workout.
