Thornton Beach State Park is a somewhat remote beach situated beneath tall bluffs south of the city of San Francisco. The state park is well known for its equestrian and hiking trails along the bluff terraces above the water. An overlook platform offers some great views out onto the Pacific Ocean. Walking north along the beach, visitors can reach Phillip Burton Beach, as well as Fort Funston beach access. To the south, there is no exit or access until Mussel Rock Park. Thornton Beach can often by cold and windy, so it’s advised that visitors bring a jacket.
