Thornton Beach State Park is a somewhat remote beach situated beneath tall bluffs south of the city of San Francisco. The state park is well known for its equestrian and hiking trails along the bluff terraces above the water. An overlook platform offers some great views out onto the Pacific Ocean. Walking north along the beach, visitors can reach Phillip Burton Beach, as well as Fort Funston beach access. To the south, there is no exit or access until Mussel Rock Park. Thornton Beach can often by cold and windy, so it’s advised that visitors bring a jacket.

Mussel Rock Park is known for having a rocky coastline, but the park also boasts hiking trails, scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, and sandy beaches. The historic Mussel Rock is a unique rock formation found just offshore from San Mateo County’s Daly City. It is made up of many small rocks and one large rock in what is called a stack, in which a headland is unevenly eroded, resulting in several small islands.
