Looking for a relaxing yet lively Bay Area escape? I always point friends to San Mateo! Tucked right between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, I’ve found this city to be the perfect mix of coastal views, cool culture, and small-town charm. Whether I’m grabbing global bites downtown or you’re looking for a peaceful bay stroll, San Mateo lets you slow down—without ever feeling boring.

San Mateo, CA Highlights (My Picks for You):

  • When I’m with family, CuriOdyssey at Coyote Point is a hit – You’ll get hands-on with science and see native animals up close. I’ve watched kids get wide-eyed at the bobcats more than once.
  • Love the outdoors? I say try the Sawyer Camp Trail – I’ve biked it more than a few times. You’ll enjoy flat paths with sweeping reservoir views and shaded canyon stretches—easy on the knees, big on scenery.
  • Bringing little ones? I’d head to Central Park’s Japanese Garden – I’ve fed koi here and watched toddlers ride the mini train with total joy. You’ll find space to relax while they play nearby.
  • Craving adventure? I recommend trying windsurfing or kiteboarding at Coyote Point – I haven’t braved it yet, but I’ve watched you pros take to the water like champs. Conditions are ideal and the backdrop? Pure Bay beauty.
  • Shopping day? Hillsdale Shopping Center is where I go – You’ll find sleek shops, tasty restaurants, and even a luxury cinema. I usually treat myself to lunch and a movie when I’m done browsing.

When I Suggest You Visit San Mateo

Honestly, April through October has been the sweet spot for me. That’s when you’ll get those crisp breezes and the clearest skies. I’ve hiked in spring and walked the shoreline in early fall—you can’t go wrong. Even winter’s mild here, but you’ll get the best outdoor time in the warmer months.

How I Get to San Mateo (and How You Can Too)

  • Driving in? I usually hop on US-101 or I-280—super straightforward. You’ll be here in about 25 minutes from San Francisco, or around 40 from San Jose. I’ve never had a bad drive in.
  • Taking the train? Caltrain is what I use when I don’t want to deal with parking. You’ll get direct access to the San Mateo Station from Palo Alto, San Jose, and the city.
  • Flying? I always tell visitors to land at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). You’ll be just 10–15 minutes away—super easy by car or Caltrain.

Where I’ve Stayed (And Where You Might Love Too)

  • San Mateo Marriott San Francisco Airport – I stayed here once for a quick trip and loved the big rooms and central spot. You’ll appreciate the full-service vibe if you like a bit of comfort.
  • Hotel San Carlos – When I wanted something cozier with character, this retro boutique spot fit the bill. You’ll be close to downtown, which I think is a huge bonus.
  • Hilton Garden Inn San Mateo – I’ve recommended this one to friends for its modern feel and pool. If you’re hitting the freeway a lot, you’ll love how accessible it is.
