Looking for a peaceful country escape surrounded by wineries and scenic hills? I always recommend heading to Ramona! The first time I visited, I was struck by how quiet and wide open it felt—rolling vineyards, horse ranches, and sunsets that stop you in your tracks. You’ll love the mix of wine tasting, outdoor trails, and the kind of local charm that makes you want to linger. Whether you're hiking, sipping Syrah, or just unwinding, I think you’ll find Ramona to be a true hidden gem in Southern California.

Best Time to Visit

I usually go in spring or fall—March to May and September to November are ideal. The weather is mild, and everything’s either blooming or turning golden. You’ll get the best hiking conditions, fewer crowds at the wineries, and stunning views of the backcountry hills. I’ve visited in summer too, but it does get hot—perfect if you’re sticking to shady tastings and evening dinners under the stars.

How to Get There

  • If you’re driving: I always take State Route 67 or 78—Ramona is about 45 minutes northeast of downtown San Diego. You’ll wind through some pretty foothill country, so take your time and enjoy the ride.
  • By Plane: I usually fly into San Diego International Airport (SAN), then rent a car. It’s a scenic drive and gives you the flexibility to explore nearby wineries and trails at your own pace.
  • By Bus: There is limited MTS bus service, but I’ll be honest—driving is by far the easiest way to get around. You’ll want that freedom to hit up vineyards, trails, and farm stops on your own schedule.

Where to Stay

  • Riviera Oaks Resort & Racquet Club: I stayed here once and loved the space—full kitchens, fireplaces, and access to trails. You’ll appreciate the spa and tennis courts too if you like a little activity with your relaxation.
  • San Vicente Golf Resort: This is where I go when I want a relaxing stay with everything in one place. You’ll get great views, a pool, a full golf course, and on-site dining—all with that peaceful, rural backdrop.
