When I need a quiet beach break with coastal views and no crowds, I head to Marina—and I think you’ll find it just as refreshing. It’s one of those laid-back places where I can walk for miles along the dunes, breathe in the ocean air, and truly slow down. You’ll love the wide beaches, peaceful vibe, and easy access to Monterey Bay. Whether I’m biking the coast or just watching the sunset with a blanket and a book, Marina always brings me back to center.
Best Time to Visit
I’ve found the best months to explore Marina are from May through October. That’s when you’ll catch the clearest skies and most comfortable temps—perfect for long beach walks or dune hikes. You’ll notice it stays cooler than inland California in summer, thanks to that soothing ocean breeze. I always pack a light jacket just in case, but you’ll still love being outdoors all day.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I usually drive along scenic Highway 1—it’s about 10 minutes north of Monterey and 2 hours south of San Francisco. You’ll love the views on the way in.
- By Train/Bus: I’ve used Amtrak and the MST buses from Salinas—they’re a reliable option if you’re not driving. You’ll find it pretty simple to get around without a car if you plan ahead.
- By Air: I’ve flown into Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), which is only 15 minutes away. You can also fly into San Jose International (SJC) if you don’t mind the 1.5-hour drive—I’ve done both and they’re easy.
Where to Stay
- Sanctuary Beach Resort – This is my go-to when I want to splurge a little. You’ll get a private path to the beach, fire pits, and sunsets that feel like a dream—it’s pure coastal luxury.
- SpringHill Suites by Marriott – I’ve stayed here when I needed something modern and easy. You’ll appreciate the free breakfast and family-friendly feel, especially if you’re traveling with kids or visiting CSUMB.
- Ramada by Wyndham Marina – When I’m looking for something more budget-friendly, I choose this spot. You’ll find it clean, convenient, and close to Highway 1 and local shops—it’s a great base for exploring.
