Need a convenient Bay Area getaway with parks, culture, and history? I always tell friends—head to Hayward! I’ve explored its peaceful gardens, vibrant downtown, and incredible hillside trails, and I think you’ll be surprised by how much this East Bay gem has to offer. Whether you’re chasing outdoor time, creative inspiration, or just a low-key local escape, Hayward has something for you.
Hayward, CA Highlights:
- Hayward Japanese Gardens: This place is my go-to when I want to slow down. I’ve wandered through the serene paths and koi-filled ponds—it’s peaceful, photogenic, and perfect for a quiet afternoon.
- Garin Regional Park: I love hiking here, especially for the views. You’ll pass old farm structures and rolling hills with sweeping Bay vistas. Bring water—and your camera!
- Downtown Hayward: Every time I visit, I find a new mural or a spot to grab a bite. The street art is bold and colorful, and the local eats range from tacos to ramen. It’s a fun area to explore on foot.
- Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center: If you’re into nature like I am, this place is worth the walk. I’ve spotted so many birds on the trails, and the educational exhibits are great for kids and curious adults alike.
- California State University, East Bay: The campus views are some of the best I’ve seen. I’ve gone just to walk around and take in the panorama—and sometimes to catch a student art show or performance.
Best Time to Visit
If you ask me, spring and fall (March–May and September–November) are the best times to visit. I’ve hiked Garin in April when the hills are green and wildflowers are blooming—it’s magical. Fall is just as nice, with crisp mornings and clear skies, perfect for festivals or a relaxed downtown stroll.
How to Get There
- Driving? I usually take I-880 or I-580 depending on traffic. Hayward’s about 30 minutes from both San Francisco and Oakland, which makes it an easy weekend jump.
- Taking BART? Super convenient. I’ve used both the Hayward and South Hayward stations. You can hop on from most major Bay Area cities and skip the traffic altogether.
- Flying in? I go through Oakland International Airport (OAK) when I’m traveling from out of state. It’s only about 20 minutes away by car, so you’re not wasting time getting there.
Where to Stay
- Hampton Inn Oakland-Hayward – I’ve stayed here before and appreciated the clean rooms and free breakfast. It’s right off the freeway, so it’s easy to get in and out.
- La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Oakland – Hayward – This place is great if you're traveling with a pet or just want a pool to relax by. I’ve recommended it to friends, and they had a great experience.
- Best Western Plus Inn of Hayward – A solid budget-friendly pick. It’s close to downtown and the BART, so you can leave the car and explore on foot or by train. I’ve used it for quick trips and had no complaints.
