You can smell Hammond's Gourmet Ice Cream long before you walk in the door. The aroma of fresh waffle cones made in the store is tantalizing, there is no way to pass by without stopping in for a taste. The industrial space the shop occupies is fabulous, with high ceilings, and a curious chandelier made out of vintage sundae cups and reused wood. The tables and countertops are manufactured of wood from trees fallen around San Diego.
There are more than 100 flavors they rotate regularly, 32 of which are available at a time. The ice cream is made in Hawaii with local ingredients, with 18 percent butterfat. Low air is infused during the mixing process which gives the ice cream its signature density and richness. Their ice cream was awarded the Hawaii Seal of Quality, because more than half of the ingredients come from the Island. Some of the most popular flavors includeChocolate Coconut Macadamia Nut, Lychee Cream, Toasted Coconut, Tahitian Vanilla, Ginger Cream and Lilikoi Sorbet.
