Craving coastal charm, sunny skies, and unforgettable family fun? Let me tell you why I always recommend Carlsbad. After 25 years of travel writing, I’ve visited countless seaside towns, but Carlsbad is one I return to again and again. If you’re like me and love a destination that blends laid-back beach vibes with plenty to do, you’ll feel right at home here. From strolling flower-filled fields to lounging on soft-sand beaches or grabbing fish tacos in the vibrant downtown, Carlsbad checks all the boxes—whether you’re traveling solo, with kids, or on a romantic getaway.

Best Time to Visit

I usually aim for spring (March–May), and I think you’ll love it too. That’s when the Flower Fields burst into color—truly a must-see. If you prefer a more lively scene, summer brings classic SoCal energy with festivals and beach days. You might like fall if you’re into warm weather without the crowds. Even winter is pleasant here—perfect when you want a peaceful escape with mild temps and ocean breezes.

How to Get There

  • By Car: I usually drive in from San Diego—it’s a quick 35-minute trip up I-5. If you’re coming from LA, expect about 90 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • By Plane: I typically fly into San Diego International (SAN), but if you're lucky enough to catch a flight into McClellan-Palomar (CLD), you’ll be minutes from the beach.
  • By Train: I’ve taken the Pacific Surfliner before and highly recommend it—especially if you want to skip driving. You’ll step off right into Carlsbad Village, just a block or two from the action.

Where to Stay

  • Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort – I’ve stayed here and loved the ocean views and easy beach access. You’ll feel pampered with the spa and pool, too.
  • Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort – This one’s perfect if you want to stay in the heart of the village. It’s cozy, welcoming, and great for families or a relaxed getaway.
  • Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa – If you’re planning to visit LEGOLAND or want a full resort experience with golf and fine dining, this is where I’d send you.
