Coronado Beach is San Diego's hallowed public beach and has been named one of the best beaches for families with kids, and for many good reasons. It is never too crowded, and the water is always warm while the air is pleasantly cool. The sand is also surprisingly cool to walk on, perfect for sensitive kids' feet.
The surf is never too rough and even the smallest kids can splash in the shallows without fear.
There are plenty of showers scattered along the beach, and nice, clean bathrooms are available in the famous Hotel del Coronado. Near the beach is MooTime Creamery, a source of delicious ice cream for when the kids get tired of making all those sand castles.
